Senator is the classic line from the German manufacture Glashütte Original, based in the Saxon town of Glashütte. These are watches of the strict Saxon school: a railway-track minute scale, blued hands and, on a number of models including the perpetual calendar, the brand's signature Panorama Date with no bar dividing the window. The movement also sets the German school apart from Swiss classics. Through the sapphire caseback you can see the three-quarter plate and the swan-neck fine adjustment.
The line covers movements of different generations. Calibre 39-50 is a self-winding movement with a 40-hour power reserve and a rotor with a heavy 21-carat gold oscillating weight. The newer generation, the Senator Excellence line, uses Calibre 36, with the power reserve extended to 100 hours.
A good example is the Glashütte Original Senator Perpetual Calendar on Calibre 39-50: a perpetual calendar in a 40 mm steel case with polished and satin-finished surfaces, a silver dial and sapphire crystal. When choosing a Senator, start with the functions and the movement generation, then compare metal, condition and accessories.
