Architectural Horology: The Engineering of the RM 020 Tourbillon

Reimagining Traditional Horology

Pocket watches represent the historical foundation of portable timekeeping, yet contemporary watchmaking rarely revisited the format through modern technical principles until Richard Mille approached the concept. Rather than replicating 18th-century aesthetics, the brand applied its established principles of structural optimization, material research, and high-impact resistance to create the RM 020 Manual Winding Tourbillon Pocket Watch.

Case Geometry and Construction

The rectangular case design utilizes a multi-piece structure machined from titanium and white gold. Measuring 62 mm, the housing provides rigidity and dimensional stability while protecting the internal movement. The surfaces exhibit precision satin-brushing and bevelled edges, secured by torque-limiting spline screws visible along the front bezel.

The Technical Skeletonised Dial

In place of a conventional dial plate, the display relies on sapphire crystal layers and visible structural elements. Arabic numerals are printed directly onto the crystal periphery, allowing an unobstructed view of the mechanical components beneath. At 4:30, a dedicated function indicator displays the crown setting (Winding, Neutral, Hand-setting), eliminating stress on the winding stem during adjustments.

Movement Architecture and Material Science

At the center of the mechanism is Calibre RM020, a manual-winding movement constructed around a mainplate made of carbon nanofibre. Produced under high pressure and temperature, this isotropic composite material ensures thermal stability and structural rigidity across varying environmental conditions, minimizing internal friction.

Energy Distribution and Tourbillon Assembly

The movement utilizes a twin-barrel setup to supply consistent energy over a 240-hour power reserve. The tourbillon balance operates at 21,600 vibrations per hour, featuring a free-sprung balance with variable inertia screws. A linear indicator near 9:30 tracks energy reserve, giving a clear visual reference of remaining running time.

Conversion and Desk Display Integration

A key structural aspect of the model is its modularity. Equipped with a custom-engineered quick-release mechanism, the pocket watch seamlessly connects to its dedicated chain or transitions onto a matching desk stand. This allows the piece to function equally as a personal timekeeper or a stationary table clock.

Horological Position within the Brand

The RM 020 stands as a unique entry in ultra-high-end watchmaking, combining historical form with contemporary engineering. By replacing classical decorative techniques with structural efficiency, the timepiece redefines the possibilities of modern horology.
