Ingenieur is the sports watch line from the Swiss manufacture IWC Schaffhausen. The first Ingenieur appeared in 1955 as a working tool for engineers and scientists exposed to strong magnetic fields — hence the name. In 1976 it was reimagined by Gérald Genta: the steel case with integrated bracelet and a bezel with five screws made the Ingenieur instantly recognisable, and the manufacture continues to develop this look today.
The line spans several generations and versions. The current Ingenieur Automatic 40 recreates Genta's design: a 40 mm case, an integrated bracelet and a textured Grid dial of intersecting lines. It comes in steel, for example the Ingenieur 40mm Automatic Green Dial, and in titanium, the Ingenieur Titanium Automatic 40. The Ingenieur Automatic 42 Black Ceramic has a case and bracelet in black ceramic. The Big Ingenieur is a large watch on a strap, in steel and in rose gold, such as the Ingenieur 45.5 mm Rose Gold. More complicated calibres appear in 45 mm chronographs, including the Big Ingenieur Chronograph and a perpetual calendar model. The Vintage Ingenieur Automatic Edition Laureus Sport for Good Foundation stands apart: a 42.5 mm steel watch with a blue dial in the style of mid-20th-century classics.
Within the line, the choice is made by size, material, strap or bracelet, and functions. Cases range from 40 to 45.5 mm, in steel, titanium, ceramic and rose gold. The watch is worn on an integrated bracelet, a leather strap or rubber. Each model has a date, and some add a power reserve indicator, a flyback chronograph or a perpetual calendar.
