The Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso is one of the most recognisable and enduring designs in fine watchmaking. Created in 1931 at the request of British officers in India who wanted to protect the crystal of their watches while playing polo, the line soon outgrew its purely practical purpose. Its key design feature is the swivelling case that slides smoothly in its carrier, along with three horizontal lines — the decorative gadroons that became a canonical expression of Art Deco.
The manufacture from Le Sentier develops the collection in several directions. Monoface versions stay true to the original, with a solid steel or gold back that is ideal for personal engraving. The Duoface concept offers two independent dials with different time zones and styles, driven by a single in-house calibre. Materials include stainless steel, rose gold and platinum, and dials are decorated with hand guilloché and Grand Feu enamel.
The engineering challenge of the Reverso lies in creating rectangular movements that follow the geometry of the case. Unlike most brands, which put round calibres in square cases, Jaeger-LeCoultre develops shaped movements, both hand-wound and self-winding. This makes the best use of the space inside and keeps the case thin, so the watch wears comfortably under the cuff of a dress shirt.
The Reverso is a benchmark of understated, intellectual luxury. It is a choice for collectors and professionals who value architectural rigour of form, a rich manufacture heritage and a quiet status that needs no loud logos.
