Zenith El Primero

ABOUT COLLECTION

The Zenith El Primero series holds a special place in the history of Swiss watchmaking as the first line of high-frequency automatic chronographs. Introduced in 1969, it set the technical standard for measuring intervals to a fraction of a second. The series combines complex mechanics, a high frequency of 36,000 vibrations per hour (5 Hz) and expressive design that has evolved from vintage cushion cases to modern sports chronographs.

The signature of the El Primero is its dial layout with overlapping tricolour sub-dials (light grey, dark grey and blue) and a bright central chronograph seconds hand. Over the decades the collection has divided into several stylistic directions: from the faithful Chronomaster Revival models, which recreate the proportions of the historical originals, to the dynamic Chronomaster Sport with ceramic bezels and modern skeletonised interpretations.

The engineering focus is on reducing friction, optimising the power reserve and introducing advanced materials, including titanium, ceramic and high-tech alloys. Modern versions of the chronograph measure 1/10 of a second, with the central hand completing a full rotation in 10 seconds — a practical demonstration of high-frequency mechanics. The cases are designed with ergonomics in mind, so even complicated models sit comfortably on the wrist.

These are versatile watches for city life and business meetings, combining a rich engineering background with a contemporary look. With regular servicing, the high-frequency movements can be kept in excellent condition.
